Star Wanderings
The modern word “planet” comes from the ancient Greek “planetes,” meaning “wanderer.” From our surface perspective looking into the seemingly unchanging and vast backdrop of the cosmos, the planets are those few gems of light that wander the sky relative to all other stars.
Through careful and tedious observation, and a lineage of teachers and students and innovators, we have changed our collective perspectives throughout time. This has been a process of expanding our Universe significantly, changing our place in it, and challenging our cherished beliefs in the face of new insights: transforming the meaning of the word “Planet”.
We now understand these wandering points of light are massive celestial bodies locked in a swirling dance with our Sun, just as we are. We have come to know that we, too, exist as a planet, and from afar we are but a pale blue dot glowing with precious Life, wandering an inhospitable storm.
It is certain our story is not fully revealed yet. So let us keep learning, exploring, questioning, listening to the wisest among us, shifting perspectives, and continue to transform what “Planet” means to Us.
